The Philadelphia Eagles will field their starting running back for the first time in weeks as they host the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night. Saquon Barkley is active for the contest, a notable shift given the team's recent offensive struggles. This game serves as a critical test for a unit that has been hampered by injuries and inconsistent production all season long.

Barkley was listed as questionable with a hamstring issue earlier in the week. He practiced in a limited capacity on Thursday and Friday, then moved to full participation on Saturday. The move to active status allows the Eagles to rely on their primary ground threat against a division rival. His return comes as the Eagles continue to navigate a thin roster at key offensive positions.

The stakes are high because Barkley’s presence changes the dynamic of the backfield. He has rushed for 182 yards on 36 attempts this season, averaging 5.1 yards per carry. By comparison, other Eagles running backs have averaged just 2.8 yards per rush on 71 attempts. In the previous week against the Carolina Panthers, Dameon Pierce handled only 12 rushing attempts, producing 35 yards and a touchdown.

The offense has faced a rough stretch. The Eagles have averaged fewer than 4.0 yards per play over three consecutive games, a milestone not seen since 1999. They also trail the league in total yardage differential, being out-gained by 108.3 yards per game. These numbers reflect a team that has struggled to establish a consistent rhythm on offense.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season after blood clots were discovered in his lungs. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith has also been ruled out with a hamstring injury. These absences have forced the Eagles to lean heavily on their passing game without their usual weapons, making Barkley’s return a tangible boost to the ground game.

Barkley has been injured since the start of the season. He suffered a stinger in Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans and pulled his hamstring in the first quarter of the Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams. He played on fewer than 16% of offensive snaps in half of his appearances. His availability now provides the Eagles with a proven option in the running game for the first time in several weeks.

The home record adds context to the matchup. The Eagles have won four straight home games against the Cowboys, tying the second-longest streak in team history. They have also won seven of their past eight primetime games at Lincoln Financial Field. The presence of Barkley gives the defense and the ground game a new element to work with in this rivalry contest.
