Jordanian security forces detained three armed men on Monday after a firefight in Karak governorate. The arrests stem from a deadly attack on a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud that occurred on Friday. State television reported that the initial incident left nine people dead and wounded forty others. Witnesses described the shooting as lasting several minutes during a funeral service.

According to the Public Security Directorate, investigators found the three suspects hiding in an abandoned house in Karak. The men refused to surrender and opened fire on approaching officers. Security forces returned fire, wounding all three individuals before taking them into custody. The directorate confirmed that no police personnel were injured during the exchange. Officials also stated that they recovered multiple firearms and ammunition from the suspects.

Authorities have labeled the attackers as extremist terrorists, though no organization has claimed responsibility for the violence. King Abdullah, a key partner to the United States in regional security, ordered his forces to respond to the rare attack on the Christian minority with an iron fist. The directorate noted that the suspects met their just fate, emphasizing that terrorism has no place in Jordanian society.

Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya announced that officials are examining the circumstances that drive young people toward extremism. He stated that anyone found to have participated in the attack would be held accountable. Jordan remains a relatively stable state in the Middle East, and authorities say they have successfully foiled several Islamist plots in previous years. The directorate has not publicly named the three detained men or linked them to a specific Islamist group.
